Slack

Connect the bot to Slack so your team can ask data questions, create tasks, and get insights directly in channels and DMs.

Setup

  1. Create a Slack App at api.slack.com/apps
  2. Enable Event Subscriptions and Bot Token Scopes
  3. Required scopes: chat:write, channels:read, channels:join, files:write, app_mentions:read, im:history
  4. Install the app to your workspace
  5. In tvaras, go to Admin → Connectors → Slack
  6. Connect via OAuth or paste the Bot Token and Signing Secret
  7. Click Test Connection

How It Works

  • @mentions — mention the bot in any channel to ask a question
  • Direct messages — DM the bot for private conversations
  • Threads — the bot maintains context within a thread (multi-turn conversation)
  • Auto-join — the bot can automatically join public channels when mentioned

Capabilities

  • Send messages to channels and threads
  • Upload files (charts, CSVs, reports)
  • Search channels by name
  • Full tool access (BigQuery, dbt, Jira, etc.) — same as web chat
  • Create tasks from Slack conversations

Configuration Options

In Admin → Connectors → Slack:

  • Bot personality — customize the bot's tone and behavior in Slack
  • Recipes — trigger text + response prompt pairs for automated responses
  • Data team members — users with elevated access in Slack
  • Public access — whether non-team members can interact with the bot
  • Deny message — custom message shown to unauthorized users
